Propel

As a design director, I led a team of designers and researchers focused on building banking products to help those on disability and other government benefits access and manage those financial benefits via the Propel Debit Card.

Some of the projects and outcomes my team and I were responsible for:

  • Strategic 0 to 1 initiatives to develop new products for SSI/SSDI recipients, driving a 30% increase in direct deposits to our Propel Debit Card.
  • Creating a new digital experiences for benefits claimants to manage their benefits
  • Helped over 16,000 Propel users receive $60 million in Child Tax Credit payments on their Propel Debit Card

Propel for Disability Recipients

Propel had largely been focused on members receiving food stamps since it's inception. However, we noticed that 25% of Propel users also recieved some form of payments from the SSA on their Propel Debit Card. Additionally, these SSA debit card users retained at a higher rate. And this was without designing any features specific to them!

I lead a large cross-functional product discovery project to envision new features for Propel geared specifically towards SSI/SSDI recipients. Through our work, we discovered new areas of the product to invest in, and where we can evolve current features to better support these users.

As a result, we were able to ship 3 major new products for our SSI/SSDI users, increase deposits into the Propel Debit Card by 30%, and foster a sense of financial clarity and security for our SSI/SSDI users.

Child Tax Credit

In 2021, President Biden announced the Build Back Better Act. This program increased the Child Tax Credit to monthly payments as well as a tax credit. Many Providers users who previously did not qualify to receive the child tax credit (due to no tax filing) were now able to but had no means to receive it. I had the privilege of designing tools and content to help our users understand this new Child Tax Credit program as well as receive their payments. Thanks to our efforts, we were able to put $60 million monthly dollars into the hands of Propel users via the Propel Debit Card.
